Before you choose a size, check three things: where it will sit, what circuit it will plug into, and whether you can live with the noise. Here’s what Harvest Right, Blue Alpine and Stay Fresh publish.

Sources: Harvest Right FAQ; Blue Alpine Medium and Large product pages; Stay Fresh freeze-dryer collection page and 5-Shelf product page.

What this means: A NEMA 5-20 receptacle has one horizontal slot (a “T” shape), and it needs a 20 A breaker and suitable wiring behind it. If the X-Large, the Blue Alpine Large, or the Stay Fresh Large or Mega is on your list and you don’t have a 20 A circuit where the machine will go, budget for an electrician. Blue Alpine notes that most household receptacles are 15 A.

Extension cords and GFCI outlets: LSU AgCenter’s freeze-drying FAQ, summarizing Blue Alpine’s owner’s manual, says to plug directly into the wall (no extension cords, surge protectors or adapters) and to avoid GFI outlets, which may not supply stable power.

Want to see what your unit actually uses? A plug-in energy monitor can show it, provided it’s rated for the machine’s current draw. Shop plug-in energy monitors on Amazon → Running costs: Freeze Dryer Cost Per Batch: How to Calculate Electricity, Bags, Oil & Machine Cost (2026).

Quick reference: size and weight

Stay Fresh lists its pumps separately: about 36 lb for the Premier pump, 55 lb for the Commercial pump and 62 lb for the Mega Commercial pump. Blue Alpine’s FAQ lists lower machine weights than its product pages, so we’ve used the product-page figures. Harvest Right’s own site lists the Small’s shipping weight at 172 lb, so plan for help with delivery.

Placement and clearance

Brand What the manufacturer says
Harvest Right Stable, level surface at least 3 ft above the ground so the drain hose can drop vertically. Don’t box it into a corner or enclosed cabinet; leave room on each side for airflow and keep the side vents clear. Ideal room temperature 50–75°F; don’t operate above 105°F (voids warranty). Avoid high humidity and dusty areas.
Blue Alpine Leave 6 inches on each side. Blue Alpine notes that common locations include a garage, mudroom or basement, and that a medium-sized room works well.
Stay Fresh Its manuals call for 12 inches of clearance on each side. Air intake is on the left and exhaust on the right. Stay Fresh’s bench-width guide: 48 in for the 5- and 7-Shelf, 50 in for the Large, 53.25 in for the Mega.

Extension guidance is similar. Penn State Extension gives 45–75°F as the optimal room range and suggests a countertop, sturdy cart or table. USU Extension notes the machine can’t sit on the floor.

A heavy-duty rolling cart rated well above the machine’s weight plus pump can be a practical solution. Check the cart’s load rating and its top size against the dimensions above, and make sure the drain hose can still run down into a container. Noise

Only one of the three manufacturers publishes a noise figure: – Blue Alpine: 65–75 dB, “comparable to a washing machine, but not as loud as a vacuum.” – Harvest Right and Stay Fresh: we found no published decibel rating on their sites as of October 11, 2026.

Extension sources describe the noise this way: – Penn State Extension: both the pump and the freeze dryer make “a droning noise… similar to a vacuum cleaner,” and the system beeps at cycle end or on an error, which can happen at night. – USU Extension (2018): cites measured vacuum-pump readings of about 62–67 dB, compared with roughly 70 dB for a household vacuum.

Batches run roughly a day or more: 13–35 hours for most foods according to Harvest Right’s FAQ, and 12–20 hours on average according to Blue Alpine’s product pages. Plan placement around the noise lasting that long. A garage, basement, laundry room or mudroom keeps it out of living space, as long as that room stays within the manufacturer’s temperature range.

Oil pumps can also put out an oil mist. See Oil vs Oil-Free Freeze Dryer Pumps (2026): Cost, Maintenance & Which to Choose and Shop vacuum pump oil mist filters on Amazon →.

Pre-purchase checklist

  1. Measure the spot, including the side clearance each manufacturer asks for and room to open the door and pull trays.
  2. Find the circuit. Is it 15 A or 20 A? What else is on it? Harvest Right requires a dedicated circuit for every size.
  3. Check room temperature in summer and winter against the manufacturer’s range.
  4. Plan the drain: a hose and container below the unit.
  5. Plan the noise: where it can run for 24+ hours without bothering anyone.
  6. Plan the weight: a surface or cart rated for machine plus pump, and help on delivery day.

FAQ

Can a freeze dryer plug into a regular outlet?

Smaller models, yes. Blue Alpine’s Medium and Stay Fresh’s 5- and 7-Shelf run on standard 15 A circuits, and Harvest Right’s Small and Medium use a standard 110 V outlet but require a dedicated 15 A circuit. Harvest Right’s X-Large, Blue Alpine’s Large, and Stay Fresh’s Large and Mega need a 20 A circuit.

Do I need a dedicated circuit?

Harvest Right says yes for every size. Stay Fresh requires one for the Large and Mega and recommends one for the 5-Shelf. Blue Alpine lists breaker sizes. Sharing a circuit with other appliances risks tripped breakers mid-batch.

How loud is a freeze dryer?

Blue Alpine lists 65–75 dB. Penn State compares the drone to a vacuum cleaner. Harvest Right and Stay Fresh don’t publish a figure.

Can I keep a freeze dryer in the garage?

You can place a unit in a garage, mudroom or basement if the temperature stays within the manufacturer’s range, but always check actual temperatures. Harvest Right’s ideal range is 50–75°F and Penn State’s is 45–75°F. Hot summer garages or freezing winter ones can fall outside those ranges.
